News: Glashütte Original Sixties Iconic Square Collection

The 60s; social revolution, fast cars, The Beatles—it was a decade worth remembering. The style of the 60s is still symbolic today of timeless cool, and it’s this decade that Glashütte Original has based its Sixties Iconic Square Collection upon. Each piece comes with a different colour dial, inspired by hues that were previously featured on the brand’s ‘Spezimatic’ watches during the 1960s. The dials have been crafted at Glashütte Original’s own dialmaking factory in Pforzheim, Germany, using authentic tools and techniques that were used when the original watches were made. There are five different models, and each is numbered to 25 pieces, taking its name from its dial colour: Forest, Ocean, Graphite, Tangerine and Fire.

The dials are given their distinctive ‘faded’ hue by the dégradé effect, a time-consuming process that involves building layers of coloured lacquer on to the dials, which are then baked to lock in the colour. This process means that the colour will remain bold and vibrant without risk of becoming dull, like their vintage counterparts. The technique takes both time and skill, and is a wonderful demonstration of the company’s German craftsmanship. Each dial is enclosed in a beautifully vintage cushion-shaped case in stainless steel that measures 41.3mm by 41.3mm, and the watches come on either a black or brown Louisiana alligator strap, depending on the dial colour.

The watches are powered by the Glashütte Original in-house automatic calibre 39-34, which beats at 28,800vph and offers a power reserve of 40 hours. It features time-telling and chronograph functions, and the brand’s fine Glashütte credentials are apparent in the movement’s three quarter plate construction and ribbing and double sunburst finishes. The Glashütte Original Sixties Iconic Square Collection is a fun, good-looking set of timepieces that are both a fitting tribute to the swinging style of the 60s and a bold choice for the modern wrist.
