Feature: Check Out What These Leading Brands Make Besides Watches

If you’re a successful watchmaker then you’re almost certainly an incredibly skilled person with an unerring eye for detail. Better still, these technical abilities are pretty transferable and could help you create a number of things, from bicycles to eyewear. With this in mind, let’s take a look at five incredible watchmakers whose talents extend to other products—some of which we’re sure will surprise you.

Linde Werdelin

Renowned for its technical watches, Swiss-Danish brand Linde Werdelin took on a new task back in 2017—the creation of a fully-fledged bicycle. Made in collaboration with bike-maker Rasmus Gjesing—aka Cykelmageren—this project acted as a proud nod to Danish culture and tradition and their love of bicycles. The Linde Werdelin x Cykelmageren bike, then, features a handmade vintage-style three-speed gearshift, as well as a splash of the LW blue on the frame and handles, of course.

Jaquet Droz

If you’ve never seen one of Jaquet Droz’s exquisite automata in action then we suggest you look it up and find a video of one in action right now—they’re a sight to behold! From 1773 Jaquet Droz began to perfect progressively sophisticated automata including three humanoid creations: The Writer, The Draughtsman and The Musician. Today, JD incorporates automatons into its watches like the breathtaking Magic Lotus and Loving Butterfly pieces.

Montblanc

Originally rooted in luxury writing instruments, Montblanc raised eyebrows back in 1997 when it ventured into the world of watchmaking. People within the watch community were understandably asking, “Why?”, while making snarky remarks like, “Where does the ink go?”. Although such snobbery around Montblanc may remain even now, it has managed to pull off the art of horology in its stride, and today produces popular luxury watches like the 1858 collection.

Longines

One thing’s for sure, to be able to tell the time you need a pair of eyes to read it with—unless it’s a talking clock, of course—and Longines is one watchmaker that thinks watches and eyewear go hand-in-hand. With a range of sunglasses for men and women, take your pick of the sport, classic and heritage collections and complete your look with a slick timepiece and some uber-cool eye-gear—you’ll be the talk of the town!

Casio

Famed for its cult digital watches such as the perennially trendy G-Shock, Casio has a place in the hearts of many for its nostalgic and affordable timepieces. Plus, if you’ve had to sit a calculator exam for a maths qualification, then you already know that Casio make the go-to calculators—we’re talking scientific and everything! Not only that, but the brand strikes a chord with musical folk, producing pianos and keyboards too.
