News: The New Richard Mille RM 27-04 - A New Hyper-Watch That Costs Over $1,000,000

For the 10th anniversary of its partnership with tennis icon Rafael Nadal, Richard Mille has created this: the RM 27-04 Tourbillon, a watch that costs $1,050,000 and is limited to just 50 pieces.

“I’m never going to be able to own one.” While, yes, that is definitely true for us mere mortals, that isn’t really the point of this watch. It’s a homage, a celebration, of both Richard Mille as a brand, and Rafael Nadal as a revered tennis player.

Just like other Nadal watches, the RM 27-04 is made for the tennis player. With good ol’ Richard Mille over-engineering, this watch while being tested managed to pull off a resistance to forces over 12,000 Gs. Richard Mille achieved this with the use of a tourbillon—which counteracts drag on the movement caused by gravity—and a steel wire mesh that makes up the dial.

While the steel mesh helps the watch resemble that of a tennis racket, it’s also a clever trick to help the watch reach its aforementioned 12,000+ Gs of shock resistance. The mesh suspends the 27-04's caliber RM27-04, so that once shock is introduced to the case, the movement is less affected due to the somewhat flexible nature of the steel wire mesh.

All this technology is of course found within an iconic skeletonised Richard Mille tonneau-shaped case, made this time from TitaCarb—a material comprised of both, you guessed it, titanium and carbon fibre. This watch is both incredibly strong and light. The watch only weighs 30 grams! And that includes the accompanying sweatband esque, baby-blue fabric strap.
