A large part of the bulk comes from the exceptional ceramic bezel, which has a unique safety rotation system: you have to pull it up before turning it, and then push it back down to lock it in place, making it easy, intuitive and extremely safe. The rubber coating allows for better grip as well as protection against bumps and scratches.
